Q
The role of fishmeal in animal feeding
A
Fishmeal can be used as feed for poultry, pigs, ruminants, farmed fish, and fur animals. It increases yields and efficiency of feed conversion to feed. It is especially useful for feeding young animals. For example, it can be found in broiler feed, weaning pig feed, and farmed fish and furries feed.
Fishmeal is particularly beneficial when animal growth is not optimal. For example, when the quality of ingredients in mixed feeds is poorly controlled, feeding standards are unsatisfactory and disease problems are widespread. The composition of fishmeal in poultry, pig, and ruminant feeds is assessed in detail in the IAFMM Technical Bulletin.
In the feeding of very young animals, such as early-weaned piglets (weaned before 4 weeks of age), ruminants, fish, and farmed fur animals, a special-quality fish meal is recommended. It should consist of very fresh ingredients and, for ruminants, low in soluble nitrogen.
If the feed contains fishmeal, ruminants can make better use of the roughage, especially when it forms a significant part of their diet.
Studies have demonstrated the nutritional superiority of fishmeal over other proteins, particularly vegetable proteins. It is possible to prevent the urine from breaking down most of the high-quality protein. At the same time, it provides high-quality protein with an almost ideal amino acid balance for farmed fish. Antioxidant-treated fish meal provides a valuable source of long-chain fatty acids, which are essential for fish such as trout, salmon, carp, catfish, and eel.
